4 Days Desert Tour from Marrakech Highlights

Full Itinerary—4 Day Desert Trip from Marrakech

4 days, 3 nights. Pickup from your Marrakech hotel at 7:00–8:00 AM on Day 1. Return to Marrakech on Day 4 evening around 7:00–9:00 PM.

Marrakech to Dades Valley — Through the Mountains

Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Valley of Roses → Dades Gorge

Your 4 days desert tour from Marrakech begins with an early pickup from your hotel or riad at around 7:30 AM. You head immediately south, climbing into the High Atlas Mountains on the N9 road. Within an hour you are winding through dramatic peaks and deep valleys on the way to the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — the highest paved road in Morocco, with views over the Atlas range that stretch in every direction.

Coming down the southern side of the mountains you arrive at Aït Benhaddou — the UNESCO World Heritage ksar built entirely from red clay and straw, and the filming location for Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, and Babel. You have time to cross the river on foot, climb through the centuries-old alleys, and reach the top for views over the valley. Your guide explains the history and points out the famous filming locations as you walk.

After lunch at a local restaurant you continue to Ouarzazate — “the Door of the Desert” — and on through the Valley of Roses in the Dadès Valley, where Damask rose fields line the river. We stop at a local rose cooperative where you can see how rose water and rose oil are extracted and buy genuine products directly from the women who produce them. You arrive at the Boumalne-Dadès in the late afternoon as the canyon walls turn orange and gold. Check in at your guesthouse for dinner and an overnight stay.

Overnight: Riad Gabsi Dades or similar— Dinner & Breakfast included

Into the Sahara — Todra Gorge & Erg Chebbi Dunes

Dades Valley → Tinghir → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga Dunes → Camel Trek → Desert Camp

After breakfast you depart for Tinghir, a beautiful oasis town surrounded by deep green date palms. Here you visit the magnificent Todra Gorge, where massive limestone walls rise 300 metres to form a narrow corridor just 10 metres wide at its most dramatic point. You walk through the canyon, feel the cold river at your feet, and take in the extraordinary scale of the rock walls rising straight up. One of the most memorable natural sights on any 4 days desert tour from Marrakech.

Continuing east you pass through Erfoud — Morocco’s fossil capital, where the limestone is packed with 300 to 500 million-year-old marine fossils — and Rissani, the ancient caravan town and birthplace of the Alaouite royal dynasty that still rules Morocco today. In the afternoon you arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Your camels are waiting.

The camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset is the moment every traveler on our 4 day desert trip from Marrakech says they will never forget. You ride across the golden sands as the sun drops to the horizon, the dunes turning orange and red around you, until you arrive at the luxury desert camp nestled among the dunes. After settling into your private tent, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner — harira soup, slow-cooked tagine, fresh bread, and sweet mint tea — followed by Berber drum music around the campfire. The night ends with stargazing in the clear desert sky. With zero light pollution, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye.

Overnight: Mirage Luxury Camp or similar—dinner & Breakfast included

Full Sahara Day — Desert Activities & Second Sunset

Sahara Sunrise → Desert Activities → Second Camel Trek → Desert Camp Night 2

Wake up early to witness a spectacular Sahara sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. As the sun rises, the Sahara transforms from pale grey to deep gold to blazing orange — one of the most beautiful natural sights on earth and the moment that makes the 4 days from Marrakech completely different from the 3-day tour. After breakfast you have the entire day to spend in and around the desert.

Sandboarding on the dunes — climb to the top and slide back down on a board. Great fun for everyone and free of charge. For those who want more, optional quad biking and a 4×4 desert exploration are available — covering the black volcanic desert south of Erg Chebbi, ancient fossil beds, and the extraordinary Dayet Srji salt lake where flamingos gather in spring. You can also visit Khamlia village, where Gnawa music was born.

In the afternoon, rest, read, or simply sit with the silence of the Sahara. As the sun drops again, your camel is ready for a second sunset trek into the dunes. Dinner around the campfire, music, more stars. A second night in the desert — this is the reason most guests say they chose the 4 day tour from Marrakech over the 3-day version.

Overnight: Mirage Luxury Camp or similar—dinner & Breakfast included

Sahara Sunrise & Return via the Drâa Valley

Merzouga Desert → Drâa Valley → Agdz → Zagora → Ouarzazate → Marrakech

One last sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast at the camp, your driver begins the return journey — on a completely different and equally spectacular route via the Drâa Valley. This is one of the most beautiful drives in Morocco. The road runs through date palm oases for over 100 kilometres, past ancient kasbahs and Berber villages perched on hillsides, and through the striking volcanic landscapes of the Anti-Atlas range.

The Drâa Valley is lined with date palms, rose gardens, and centuries-old mud-brick fortresses — a completely different visual experience from the route south on Day 1, and just as beautiful. After stopping for lunch in Ouarzazate, you continue north through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass and back to Marrakech. Your driver will stop for photos or breaks whenever you wish.

You return to Marrakech in the early evening and drop off at your accommodation — concluding your 4 days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga dunes with memories that will last a lifetime.

Driving distance: Approximately 1,100 km total. 4 days / 3 nights.

We planned this with Travel via Morocco from Marrakech. 10 people, 4 days, two nights in the desert camp. Saw beautiful scenery at Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge, Aït Benhaddou and the Sahara. The ride was great and the second night under the stars was unforgettable.
