Full Itinerary — 3 Day Desert Trip from Marrakech
3 days, 2 nights. Pickup from your Marrakech hotel at 7:00–8:00 AM on Day 1. Return to Marrakech on Day 3 evening around 7:00–9:00 PM.
Marrakech to Dades Valley — Through the Mountains
Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Valley of Roses → Dades Gorge
Our 3 days desert tour from Marrakech begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech at around 7:30 AM. This is the start of one of the most rewarding journeys you can take in Morocco — a Marrakech to desert tour that takes you from the vibrant medina streets all the way to the golden dunes of the Sahara over three incredible days.
We head south on the N9 road into the High Atlas Mountains, climbing quickly through dramatic peaks and deep valleys on the way to the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — the highest major mountain pass in North Africa. Along the way we stop at panoramic viewpoints to take in the breathtaking scenery and capture the mountain views.
Our next stop is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou, one of the most spectacular fortified villages in Morocco and one of the highlights of every 3 days Marrakech desert tour we operate. Built entirely from red clay and straw on the banks of the Mellah River, this ancient ksar has served as a backdrop for dozens of major productions including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, and Babel.
You will have time to explore with your guide — crossing the river on foot, climbing through centuries-old alleys, and reaching the top for stunning views over the valley. Your guide will explain the history and point out famous filming locations as you walk.
After lunch at a local restaurant we continue to Ouarzazate, known as “The Door of the Desert,” where we visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah — one of the finest examples of traditional southern Moroccan architecture still standing today. From Ouarzazate we follow the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” east through the Skoura palm grove and the beautiful Valley of Roses, where Damask rose fields line the Dades River for kilometres. In spring the scent of the roses fills the entire valley.
We stop at a local rose cooperative where you can see how rose water and rose oil are extracted and buy genuine products directly from the women who produce them.
We arrive at the Dades Gorge in the late afternoon, just as the canyon walls turn orange and gold in the sunset light. If time permits we will stop to see the remarkable rock formations known locally as the “Monkey Fingers” — unusual eroded stone columns that rise from the valley floor near the top of the gorge road. You then check into your comfortable hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Overnight: Riad Gabsi Dades or similar— Dinner & Breakfast included
Into the Sahara — Todra Gorge & Erg Chebbi Dunes
Dades Valley → Tinghir → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga Dunes → Camel Trek → Desert Camp
After breakfast we depart for Tinghir, a beautiful oasis town surrounded by one of the most extensive palm grove systems in Morocco — deep green date palms stretching along the valley floor as far as you can see. Here we visit the magnificent Todra Gorge, where massive limestone walls rise 300 metres to form a narrow corridor just 10 metres wide at its most dramatic point. You will have time to walk through this impressive canyon, feel the cold river running at your feet, and take in the extraordinary scale of the rock walls rising straight up around you. This is one of the most memorable natural sights on any 3 days desert tour from Marrakech Morocco tours itinerary.
Continuing our 3 day desert trip from Marrakech east, we pass through Tinejdad, Erfoud — Morocco’s fossil capital, where the limestone is packed with 300-to-500-million-year-old marine fossils — and Rissani, the ancient caravan town and birthplace of the Alaouite royal dynasty that still rules Morocco today. We stop for lunch along the way at a good local restaurant. In the afternoon we arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Here, your camels will be waiting to take you on a 1 to 2 hour trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi desert.
The Marrakech Morocco camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset is the moment every traveler on our 3 days desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga dunes and camel trek says they will never forget. You ride across the golden sands as the sun drops lower over the Sahara, creating a magical play of light and shadow across the dunes. You stop at a high dune to watch the full sunset before your Berber guide leads you to our luxury desert camp nestled among the dunes.
After settling into your private tent, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars — harira soup, slow-cooked tajine, fresh khobz bread, and sweet mint tea — followed by Berber drum music around the campfire. The night ends with stargazing in the clear desert sky, an unforgettable experience far from any city lights. With zero light pollution for hundreds of kilometres in every direction, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye on every clear night in the Sahara.
Overnight: Mirage Luxury Camp or similar—dinner & Breakfast included
